Using the case study of the redevelopment of a former petrol filling station, Gareth Leonard (Managing Director of Regenesis Ltd) and guest speaker Simon Ware (Managing Director of UK based environmental consultancy, WDE), discuss the process of devising, optimising and delivering the remedial solution for sites impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons. Discussion is made on the importance of integrating the activities of consultant and potential solutions provider. The intention of the presentation is to share experience of the successful investigation, remediation and validation of sites impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons and will be of interest to contaminated land practitioners, regulators and problem holders.

Simon Ware BSc (Hons), MSc, FGS, CGEOL Managing Director, WDE Consulting Simon is the Managing Director of WDE Consulting Ltd, and is responsible for a team of Geo-Environmental Consultants who are based in Hertfordshire. He has over 25 years’ experience of working in the Brownfield market in the UK. After graduating from Portsmouth in 1989 with a BSc in Geology, he joined Fugro Ltd and worked on various major site investigation projects (Chep Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong being the most prestigious). He then left Fugro in 1993 to complete an MSc in Environmental Geophysics at Birmingham University returning to the newly formed Fugro Environmental once graduated. FEL was then acquired by ENSR and he remained until 1999 whereon he left with a view to starting his own consultancy. Since then he has worked on the assessment, remediation and verification of numerous sites, including petrol stations, chemical works, gas works and former MOD land.
Gareth Leonard BSc (Hons), MSc, FGS, MSEE, CEnv Managing Director, Europe, REGENESIS Gareth is the Managing Director of Regenesis in Europe, in which role he manages a dedicated team of in situ remediation specialists to provide the design and implementation of remedial solutions for environmental consultants, remediation contractors and end-users. Gareth has worked in the remediation industry for more than 15 years, initially as a Senior Project Manager at a remediation contracting firm. He then joined Regenesis as the District Manager for the UK and Scandinavia, where he provided over 3,000 project designs, and assisting in the successful implementation of more than 1,000 projects. Prior to this, Gareth worked as a Senior Drilling Fluids Engineer in offshore oil exploration. Gareth holds a BSc (Hons) in Geology from the University of Leeds, an MSc in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Northumbria at Newcastle and a Certificate of Technical Competence (4TMHCL). Gareth has extensive experience of traditional, process-based and in situ remediation techniques including building and managing the UK’s first steam enhanced recovery system.
